It is with deep regret that we advise you that Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officer Sarah Grell died in the line of duty on Monday, May 24, 2021.  Sarah’s patrol vehicle collided with a tractor trailer in Itasca County.  Sarah served as a Conservation Officer since 2005, in both the Cambridge and Duluth stations prior to being stationed in Grand Rapids.  Sarah is survived by her husband Gene, as well as three children.  Sarah’s husband is a DNR Forestry employee and her mother Julie is retired from the DNR in Grand Rapids.  Sarah’s father is the late Captain Craig Backer, Grand Rapids Regional Supervisor; her uncle is retired Conservation Officer Keith Backer – Tenstrike; and her grandfather is the late LT Jack Backer, Area Supervisor in Bemidji.

The visitation is on Friday, May 28, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. at the IRA Civic Center, 1401 NW 3rd Avenue, Grand Rapids, 55744.  The service will follow at 1:00 p.m. at the Civic Center. Lunch will be served following the service.

Visiting officers may park in the gravel lot in the northwest corner of the Civic Center. Overflow parking is available at St. Andrews Lutheran Church (501 16th St. NW, Grand Rapids, MN 55744). Visiting officers will enter through the south doors of the Civic Center.
