The show currently covers conservation law enforcement news, court results, a spotlight case and a website of the week. I hope to add some interviews in the future.
I cover news from around the world with a majority of stories from North America. In episode 4, I featured the NAWEOA website.
Feedback, news and stories are welcome from all.

Vt. hunter busted for bolting antlers on dead doe
Posted by admin on: Saturday 14 March @ 17:57:32 |
BURLINGTON, Vt. – A man who bolted antlers to the head of a dead doe and posed for a photograph with the deer was fined $400 and jailed for game violations.
Marcel Fournier, 19, shot the deer the evening of Nov. 22 and used lag bolts and epoxy to attach a 10-point rack, officials said. He then checked in the kill as lawful game at Barnie's Market.
It's illegal to kill an antlerless deer, and it's also illegal to hunt at night.
The Concord resident admitted to the killing and led a game warden to the deer's remains after an anonymous caller alerted authorities. Fournier said he had "quite a time" drilling and fastening the antlers, authorities said.
Game warden David Gregory said the antlers didn't look or feel right.
"When you grabbed them, you'd feel movement," he said.
Col. David LeCours, chief warden of the state Department of Fish and Wildlife, said the size of the antlers relative to the size of the deer seemed off.
"Something wasn't natural about them, in addition to the fact that they weren't natural," he said.
Fournier was sentenced to 10 days in jail Feb. 18 for taking a deer in a closed season. He won't qualify for a state hunting, fishing or trapping license for at least three years.
LeCours said add-on antlers are the stuff of legend, but that it's the first documented case of it in Vermont.

Endangered Species: California Fish and Game Wardens
Posted by admin on: Wednesday 04 March @ 18:39:47 |
*The Warden Shortage – California has the worst game wardens per capita ratio of any state or Canadian province – 192 in the field -- which is attracting organized crime to poaching and contributing to more than a $100 million a year black market in wildlife that has dire consequences for salmon, striped bass, sturgeon, deer, abalone and many other species. The warden shortage also reduces protection from marijuana cultivation and illegal drug manufacturing on wildlands, which threaten all outdoor recreationists.
“Game Wardens have run silent and deep for many years,” says DFG Law Enforcement Chief Nancy Foley. “Endangered Species” lets everyone see what it’s like to be a game warden. Working from a home office, covering huge remote areas alone, and normally without backup, game wardens enforce a wider range of law – wildlife, criminal, civil, and traffic law – than any other state law enforcement officer, as well as performing search and rescue, homeland security, hunter education instruction, and combating drug manufacturing. Being a game warden is among the most dangerous of all law enforcement jobs, as well as the lowest paid. But, for those who stick with it, they would not have it any other way.
*Production – For nearly two years, James and Andrew Swan, (Snow Goose Productions), traveled the state, riding along with over 50 wardens in airplanes, helicopters, snowmobiles, boats and patrol vehicles. Special segments include a bust of a 20,000-plant marijuana grove; ground-aerial patrols for spotlighting; shootout in a marijuana grove; takedowns for abalone, caviar and bear poaching; and a warden’s discovery of a terrorist cell.

That is, until now.
Wardens yesterday handed out copies of a new 66-minute documentary,“Endangered Species: California Fish and Game Wardens,” to every member ofthe State Assembly and Senate.

California sends out layoff notices to over 90 Game Wardens
Posted by admin on: Tuesday 03 March @ 08:39:52 |
"It's tragic our state professes to be a leader in the 'green'movement, but will not hire or maintain enough staffing to protect ournatural resources," said Jerry Karnow, a game warden and legislativeliaison to the California Fish and Game Wardens Association. "At thistime, the wardens association will not offer an endorsement of anydirector appointed by this governor."
Karnow noted the department employs only about 220 field-level gamewardens to police wildlife crimes statewide. And last week, more than90 of them got layoff notices as part of the administration's effortto balance the state budget.
Whether those layoffs go forward remains unclear.

RangerG writes: "3rd Annual Wardens on Wheels Motorcycle Rally
Winter still has a firm grip on the country but it’s time to start making plans to attend the 3rd Annual Wardens on Wheels Rally. The rally will take place the weekend of August 8th, 2009. We will be meeting at the Game Warden Museum in the International Peace Gardens located on the North Dakota/Manitoba border.
We will have a large tenting area reserved in nearby Lake Metigoshe Sate Park and a block of rooms have been reserved at The Quilt Inn, (701) 263-6500, which is located a mile down the road from the State Park.
Friday night, August 7th, we will be meeting for supper and Saturday we will meet at the museum at noon. A poker rally will take place in the surrounding area and we will return to the State Park for supper and socializing. Riders are asked to each provide a prize for the poker rally. We will also be collecting pledges to help with the planned expansion to the Game Warden Museum. If riders are unable to make the trip because of the distance involved, I’d like to encourage you to start your own rally, in your local area. It would be nice to see Wardens on Wheels Chapters open up all across the country.
Anyone wanting more information about the 3rd Annual Rally, or starting up your own rally, please contact me at rob.grainger@gov.sk.ca or contact Paul Hopkins at paul.hopkins@gov.sk.ca.
*PASSPORTS REQUIRED*
Please remember that all travelers entering the US will require a passport for the 2009 rally. We will have to clear US Customs upon leaving The Peace Gardens.

After a thorough investigation, the officer determined a bear had been captured in the snare and then shot by a group of individuals who were cutting firewood on the property. He advised the officer they came upon the bear in the woods and thought that it was injured. He said that he and another individual shot the bear with the .9mm rifle. COs Hutchinson and Kuechler investigated a complaint of a Clifton resident in possession of exotic species without a permit. After a brief discussion, the individual admitted to possessing two alligators. The animals were seized and placed with an out of state cooperator and the appropriate summonses were issued.
COs from the Northern and Central Regions conducted Bear Enforcement Sweeps at Kittatiny, Pleasant Valley and Paulins Kill Lake Communities.
CO Hutchinson attended a meeting during “Sparta Mountain Day” to discuss the ATV issues at Sparta Mountain WMA and the surrounding area. The officers’ presence and willingness to address the concerns of the group was very well received.
While patrolling Branch Brook Park, COs Sutton and Kuechler inspected an individual fishing without a license and who claimed to not have any identification. The officers were able to determine his identity and discovered he had three outstanding warrants for his arrest. The individual was arrested and transported to Essex County Jail where he was also charged with fishing without a license.
CO Hutchinson investigated the shooting of a black bear with a target arrow at a residence in West Milford. After inspecting the backyard, the officer determined that the statement provided by the family that the bear was attempting to kill a rooster was false and that they fabricated the scene. Eventually, the father admitted to being frustrated with the bear being in their trash several times during the week so he shot it. He was charged with injuring and attempting to kill a black bear.

Narcotics Arrest
On 3/5/08, EnCon Police Officer Steve Stanko was conducting a patrol check at the Derby Dam fishing access area. Officer Stanko observed a subject in a red Chevrolet pick up truck in the parking area. The vehicle had no front license plate and a check of the license plate on the rear of the vehicle, determined that the plate belonged on a black colored Toyota 4X4 pickup truck. Upon speaking to the subject about the registration mismatch he immediately admitted that his truck was not registered and that he "borrowed the plate from a friend". The driver's window was open fully and Officer Stanko observed a thin wooden stick with one end covered in ashes. Officer Stanko recognized the stick as an implement used by crack cocaine users to clean their crack pipes. When Officer Stanko asked the subject if he was engaged in smoking crack cocaine he then readily admitted to using the drug in his vehicle. The subject was detained and handcuffed. A search of his vehicle revealed approximately 1 gram of crack cocaine, four glass crack pipes, four metal screens with residue of cocaine and the wooden poker stick. The subject was arrested for Possession of Crack Cocaine, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Operating an Unregistered Motor Vehicle, Misuse of Plates and Operating without Minimum Mandatory Insurance.

Captain Fletcher responded to a complaint of shots fired from a vehicle the previous evening near a farm in Lafayette Township. He was able to locate a gut pile and drag marks in an adjacent field and a spent shell casing in the roadway. The farmer provided Captain Fletcher with the license plate number of a van he observed on the road minutes after he heard the gunshots. Captain Fletcher, CO Hutchinson and DCO Struble proceeded to the residence of the van owner and located it parked on the street. The individual admitted to shooting a deer from the van the night before. He said the vehicle was registered to his brother’s girlfriend because both he and his brother’s driver licenses were suspended. CO Hutchinson noticed a blood smeared cooler on the porch. Louisana Cadet death
Posted by admin on: Wednesday 13 February @ 14:30:05 |
BY JEFF MOORE
THE DAILY IBERIAN
The state Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is investigating the
death of one of its own.
Byron Dore, 24, of New Iberia, died Saturday when his boat struck a
submerged object in an oilfield location canal at the Port of Iberia.
Dore, a cadet in the agency's training academy, was ejected. Iberia
Parish Coroner Dr. James Falterman Sr. said he has ordered an autopsy
to determine how Dore died.
He said Dore's body had "evidence of external trauma," but that an
autopsy would be needed to determine his exact cause of death.
"He was one of our guys," said LDWF Lt. Darryl Moore. "I didn't know
him personally, but a lot of our agents were good friends with him."
Moore said Dore was hunting wild hogs around 5 p.m. in a canal owned
by Iberia Investment Canal Properties.
He had just dropped off three members of his hunting party when the
accident occurred, Moore said.
"He was supposed be coming back, either to pick them up or to go hunt
by himself," he said. "They heard him strike something and they found
him in the water later."
Moore said investigators aren't sure what type of object Dore struck,
but said oilfield location canals are often littered with tree stumps
and debris.
He said Dore was not wearing a life jacket or attached to kill
switch, but said he did not think that contributed to his death,
based on his injuries.

Brunswick poachers fined and banned from hunting
Posted by admin on: Monday 04 February @ 14:36:12 |
Two New Brunswick wildlife poachers have been fined and banned from hunting for a year, after being convicted in provincial court for offences under the Migratory Bird Conventions Act.
Gary Gould and Jake Eldridge, both of the Kingston Peninsula, were charged on Oct. 1 by a provincial conservation officer who watched them shooting waterfowl and making no effort to retrieve the birds.
Under the law, ducks and geese must be retrieved as soon as possible after they are shot.
The men shot 16 ducks, which is more than permitted by law.
Judge Henrik Tonning fined the men $200 each for failing to retrieve the dead birds and $50 for each bird shot over the allowable limit, which varies according to species, for a total of $800 each.

The moose, which was estimated to be 3 years old, broke through about 50 yards from shore.
Rescuers rushed to the scene and went out on the ice in a small boat. They used axes and chainsaws the cut a path through the ice so the moose could swim to shallower water.
Eventually, the moose climbed onto shore and after a few minutes of getting his wits back, disappeared into the woods.

Untagged/Over bag on Pheasants
On 11/7/07, EnCon Police Officer Bill Myers received a complaint that hunters were exceeding their limit of pheasants at Babcock Wildlife Management Area in Colchester. He arrived at the area and stopped a vehicle being operated by a pheasant hunter. The hunter initially denied to the officer that he had shot any pheasants. Officer Myers noted that there was fresh blood on his hands and clothing and a check of his vehicle revealed six untagged pheasants hidden under a towel. None of the pheasants were tagged. The hunter was charged with Taking Pheasants Over the Limit (4 Counts) and Failure to Tag Pheasants (6 Counts). One other hunter at the area was found with one untagged pheasant and he was charged with that violation.

Story

The death of an Americus teen by an alleged poacher's bullet last weekend has some calling for more game wardens to enforce the state's hunting laws.
But unless the Kansas Legislature can be persuaded to approve the hiring of more game wardens, hunting safety experts say it may fall to the public to help spot illegal activity -- sort of an outdoor neighborhood watch.

Gazette Opinion: Resident hunters, state agencies work to protect wildlife
Montana and Wyoming big game is being sold by the points on its antlers. It's dollars on the hoof and the envy of hunters across the nation.
Think of it as the dark side of successful wildlife management and the sacrifices made by the resident hunters of the two states.

Poacher gets probation for 15 years of killing
One of Montana's most notorious poachers, Philip Mark Payton, once hunted moose and other trophy animals with impunity, but these days the only creature he says he's after is the mouse in his house.
Two years after he was charged, Payton's victims - or rather their skulls, antlers and hides - stared at him mutely from the jury box Wednesday, providing a poignant backdrop in the sentencing of one of the worst cases of illegal killing of big game in decades in the Big Sky state.

$7.35 MILLION PAYMENT TO BE PAID TO COMMONWEALTH FOR 2006 POLLUTION
Posted by admin on: Thursday 15 November @ 18:08:40 |
Anonymous writes: "The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania today announced that it has secured one of the largest natural resources damage settlements in state history. Under terms of the settlement, Norfolk Southern will pay $7.35 million to resolve its civil liability for a June 2006 derailment in McKean County that polluted and killed fish and other aquatic life in Big Fill Run, Sinnemahoning-Portage Creek and the Driftwood Branch of Sinnemahoning Creek.
As part of the agreement, Norfolk Southern will pay $3,675,000 each to the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). The settlement agreement focuses on contamination of the environment that occurred on June 30, 2006, when approximately 31 rail cars of a train operated by Norfolk Southern derailed near Gardeau, McKean County. During the derailment, liquid sodium hydroxide spilled from three railcars into wetlands and entered Big Fill Run, a tributary of the Sinnemahoning-Portage Creek that flows through McKean County and into Cameron County. From Big Fill Run, the spilled sodium hydroxide traveled down Sinnemahoning-Portage Creek, which flows into the Driftwood Branch of Sinnemahoning Creek. This release of liquid sodium hydroxide contaminated soils, sediments, surface water, groundwater, and wetlands, and killed or damaged fish and other aquatic life and terrestrial plant and animal life.

VA Game Wardens Name Changing to Conservation Police Officer

Anonymous writes: ""Game Warden" Name Changing to "Conservation Police Officer"
Richmond, VA — Effective July 1, 2007, Virginia's game wardens will have a new name. The sworn officers in the Law Enforcement Division of the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF) will be called "conservation police officers." The Virginia General Assembly approved the change at their recent session. The name change is intended to clarify the authority of these officers who have full police powers and statewide jurisdiction.
Game wardens have been serving in law enforcement in Virginia since 1903, when the Virginia General Assembly established a statewide system of game wardens to enforce wildlife laws. In fact, game wardens in Virginia have a history that predates the creation of VDGIF which wasn't established until 1916. "

Much to my diappointment I found there to be only one Gamewarden (myself) among over 750 law enforcement trainers. I've never been to a conference that provided such a diversity in training which included Defensive Tactics, Emergency Vehicle Operators courses, Firearms armourers courses and various trainer enhancement courses.
I would like to pass this conference information on to fellow officers, so have a look at the ILEETA website. This year they offered nine scholarships which paid for my flight from Alberta. I was one of two officers choosen to attend from Canada. As a NAWEOA member I would hope this information could be passed along to all of the reps.

Brent Cole Update
Posted by admin on: Tuesday 13 February @ 08:18:08 |
Our fund-raising is going great. So far we have over $22,000.00 in the account here in Gander. We are continuing with our efforts and are not stopping til Brent says so. We have several more events planned in the near future which include two more dinner, dance and auctions to be held in St.John's and Corner Brook. We have a couple of hockey games and tournaments coming up where the proceeds from the door are going to Brent and his family. Bill Peters was also gracious enough to send us five limited edition prints, one of which we already have on tickets. The others will be placed on auction or tickets in the days and weeks ahead. We are also thinking about purchasing an older model car late 60's earlier 70's and having it restored and placed on tickets as well. All of the car dealerships here in Gander, a local trades college, plus a electronic store have agreed to do all the body, engine, upholstery, etc. The electronic store said they'll put in the kick %@!#%& stereo system and a auto start kit. All we need to do now is find a suitable candidate for an "overhaulin". We think we could raise about $90,000.00 from this one event alone.
Brent and Mary have picked out a spot for their home, and I am pleased that it is on the same sub-division as I am. The house plans are being drafted and it looks like we have a contractor. Many businesses are also donating concrete, landscaping, plumbing, etc for either free or at cost price which will be a huge savings. So as you can see we are full steam ahead here.
With regards to your email to Brent don't get discouraged. Continue to send them along anyway. I know for the longest time his computer was down as it had contracted a virus. Also right now the Miller centre is under quarantine as there is a nasty Norwalk flu virus going around. Visitation is restricted and there is no one there to type his responses for him. Brent loves to hear from caring officers such as yourself so don't stop dropping him a line every now and then. Having said all that I'll mention it to him when I either see him or talk to him again that you are thinking of him and would love to hear from him.
Thanks again Marion for your concern and compassion. It is comforting to know that Brent has so many people out there rooting for him. If you wish to pass along any of this information to the others for me it would be greatly appreciated.
If you wish to give me a call sometime don't hesitate. Take Care of Yourself.

Anonymous writes: "Hello Fellow Officers
Its been a month since the last update and I thought you would all be wondering how Brent is doing. I was speaking with him last night and he was his usual upbeat self. He is doing very well and has regained feeling in his abdomen area and now has sensation along the backs of both legs and in his back. He is still unable to deliberately move muscles himself but doctors are encouraged with his progress. He is still on schedule to be home in March or April and we are all looking forward to having back in these parts.

Wildlife Instructor.
Posted by admin on: Thursday 30 November @ 10:36:43 |
Cheryl Mollohan and I are teaching wildlife at a small two-year college in southeast Ohio in Nelsonville Ohio called Hocking College. We currently have approximately 250 students in the program. Since last summer we have been looking, with no success, for a new wildlife instructor to fill a vacancy. Because we feel our strength is having instructors with real-world experience rather than a Ph.D. we would like to hire someone with a Masters and experience, but would be willing to accept an individual with a Bachelors and experience who is willing to complete a Masters while teaching. This person would help us teach all of our wildlife courses including Wildlife Management, Wildlife Techniques, Wildlife Law and Policy, Wildlife Ecology and Issues, and Wildlife Identification and Natural History. The person would also have summers off, plus almost a month off over Christmas, and a week off during spring break. Salary is based on the persons education and teaching experience so can range from $35,000 to upwards of $50,000 for approximately eight months work. You can become vested in the retirement program after five years but unfortunately not in the health care program until 15 years.
Could you let our Arizona retirees know about this job, and tell them if they know of anyone with experience that might be interested to apply. An application can be downloaded from our website at http://www.hocking.edu.
If anyone has any questions have them email me at lecount_a@hocking.edu.

The men were nabbed by officers with the Colorado Division of Wildlife (DOW) after landowners in the Meeker area reported suspicious activity involving a black Hummer with out of state plates.

Update on CO Brent Cole
Posted by admin on: Friday 10 November @ 20:39:20 |
Anonymous writes: "Hi Everyone,
I was in to see Brent this past Wednesday evening, the 8th, and was glad to see him in such a great mood after having a rough time the week before. He was very chatty and you could sense the determination in his voice. He is still not well enough for visitors or taking phone calls but I'm confident that'll soon come in time. Brent is now doing physiotherapy everyday along with occupational therapy which he looks forward to as he continues to strengthen his arms and slowly regain some fine motor skills. His lung capacity is now 100% which doctors are very pleased with. In two weeks they'll do more x-rays on the repairs to his neck and spine and if things look good he can begin weight training. He is still not able to deliberately move anything from his chest down however he continues to have tingling sensations and involuntary muscle spasms which are good signs. He'll remain in the Miller Centre for another 4-6 months, where he'll then be allowed to return home and continue his therapy in Gander.
Brent showed me all the cards and letters he has received from officers across North America, it was quite impressive. Your words of encouragement are without question helping him in his recovery. He wished again that I pass along a big thank you, and I would like to do the same. Thank you all so much for your continued caring and support.
Sincerely
Barry White

Update on CO Brent Cole
Posted by admin on: Wednesday 18 October @ 09:29:23 |
Anonymous writes: "I was in to see Brent on Monday afternoon, the 16th, and spent three hours with him. To be honest he is still in pretty bad shape. I was quite taken back and it was hard to see him just lying there. He still has no fine motor skill in his arms and fingers although he can move them somewhat. He still has to be fed, has trouble talking and gets tired very easily. Over the weekend he thought he could feel some sensation in his foot, so that gave everyone some hope. There has been a little bit of improvement in his breathing therefore they are looking at moving him to a rehab center sometime after Thursday when a bed become available. There he'll begin the real road to recovery as he'll undergo a more proactive physiotherapy program. He was in alot of pain yesterday and feeling down but I guess that is to be expected. The doctors are saying that he is looking at 18-24 months before recovery, but are not saying what exactly recovery means.
Brent is overwhelmed by the amount of support and the best wishes from officers all across North America. I carried in about forty-five emails to him, which he insisted I read to him. He asked me to pass along his thanks to everyone.
I'll be heading back in to see on the 30 of October so keep those well wishes coming.
Sincerely
Barry White

Just wanted to let everybody know about an incident that occurred this past Sunday evening. My partner in crime fighting Officer Brent Cole of Gander Newfoundland and Labrador was involved in a moose vehicle collision just minutes from his residence. He was off duty at the time and driving his Chev Impala. He struck a 14 point bull moose on the Trans Canada Highway. Brent had to be extracted from his car by the fire department, and was then taken to James Paton Memorial in Gander. After a CT scan and X-rays it was determined that Brent had several vertebrae in his neck and back broken and fractured. Brent was conscious and could move his arms however had no feeling from his chest down. He was then airlifted to the Health Sciences Center in St. John's, where yesterday, Monday, he underwent surgery to have several vertebrae in his neck fused together, and a rod placed along his spine. Doctors were pleased with how the surgery went and Brent is now sedated for 48 hours to give him time to rest. After that he'll be awaken to hopefully see that he has regained sensation in his torso and lower limbs.
Alot of you know Brent from his time served on the board of directors and his active involvement with the conference here in 2003. Anyone wishing to pass along messages can email them to me an I'll make sure that Brent hears them when he wakes. BOSTON-Estremar S.A., an Argentine company formerly known as ASC South America S.A., today pleaded guilty to violating federal anti-fish and wildlife trafficking law by importing and attempting to sell Patagonian toothfish, often marketed by the trade name Chilean seabass, without the documentation required to show it was legally harvested. Specifically, Estremar admitted that in March 2002, it knowingly imported into the United States and attempted to sell over 30,000 pounds of Patagonian toothfish. The company admitted that it reasonably should have known that the toothfish had been harvested and transported in violation of federal law because the amount imported was in excess of the amount it could legally import with the documentation accompanying the shipment. After accepting the plea U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert B. Collings immediately sentenced Estremar to the terms of its plea agreement with the United States.

The theft of Goliath, tagged the `million-dollar buck' because of his 68 points, breeds divisions among Pennsylvanians and deer farmers
By Sean D. Hamill Special to the Tribune Published May 28, 2006
REYNOLDSVILLE, Pa. -- This is a story about Goliath, the largest white-tailed buck ever recorded, and the man convicted last year of stealing him--a man who maintains his innocence.
The giant deer in question had an antler rack so big--68 points--that mere mention of his name a year and a half after he died still makes hunters swoon. His rack looked more like a moose's, and he had a body like an elk's.

K9's in the News

A loud lapping sound followed wildlife officer Jeff Gier as he drove. Bubba, a 3-year-old chocolate Labrador retriever, was drinking in his onboard kennel, a luxury unit with an automated cooling system that turns on if Gier's truck gets too hot -- even when the ignition is off. Somewhere in the back of it was Bubba's bulletproof vest.

LOOKING FOR HEROES
Posted by admin on: Tuesday 04 May @ 16:23:00 |
As you have already read in previous posts, we are planning a Game Warden Museum Celebration Day this July, in conjunction with the NAWEOA conference. As you likely also know, one of the goal of the GWM is to honor the heroes of the profession. While this has a lot to do with our fallen officers (BTW, I am up to 298 officers on my fallen officer database - hope to post ASAP), we also want to celebrate our living heroes. I think that there are a lot of you out there. So here is what I am looking for....tell me about your agency's/association's living heroes. These can be past or present officers.
Be as creative as you like and do not only think big heroes - we need to also pay tribute to our peers who are heroes in their very own small and local way as well as the big time heroes.(I want both!!)
So, tell me about:
* GW who have become media heroes - athletes, movies stars, media celebrities, politicians (ooops), business tycoons - you name it! * GW who have performed acts of heroism - large or small - and saved lives of people and/or critters, etc.,etc. * GW who contribute in a significant way to their communities - as coaches, in their church, as volunteers for the aged or the poor, etc., etc. * GW who have helped out wardens or others in third world countries * GW who do volunteer work, give blood, * GW who have initiated creative programs or ways out doing our jobs
If you can send me a short story about these officers (and a photo would be great too!), I will begin compiling a presentation that we will use at the ceremony at the peace gardens. You can send this to me direct at:
gmartin6@cogeco.ca
Thanks to all for their help with this!!!

Asianwildlife Consultancy Co.Ltd. trying to save the clouded leopards
Posted by admin on: Sunday 29 February @ 11:08:57 |
Anonymous writes: "The clouded leopards were fairly common in our wildlife parks and sanctuaries but today they are rare and seriously endangered. This is due to deforestation, pet trade and poaching of these animals for it beautiful patterned skin.
Currently, the Zoological Park Organization (ZPO) has 27 heads of clouded leopards and this is reasonably a large captive population of clouded leopards compared to the other zoos in the region where the success of breeding these cats in captivity had been low. The reason would have been basically due to poor understanding of the captive management of Clouded leopards. The financial resources are limited and there is no proper breeding programs planned for this cat in our institution on a proper scale.
The proposed breeding programs will be the first of its kind. If the program succeeds, it will provide sufficient population for final reintroduction into our forest. The program will be a key avenue for future understanding of the species itself and provide the best ability of mankind to protect himself by protecting his own environment. The clouded leopard is one of the species, which is essential for the eco-balance of the environment.
To achieve this target the management has decided to seek the assistance of various local and international institutions, foundation and association to come forward to provide assistance in the success of this program. Ex-situ captive breading of wildlife needs serious support from various organization to conserve the existing population in captivity.
The Program helps bring together various population scattered all over regional zoos so that ex-situ population can be bred in a planned basis.
PROJECT DURATION
The total program has been planned for a period of three years and total funding required for three years will be 20,000,000 (twenty million) Thai Baht. Any contributions from any private association or institution are most welcome.
